Description

Mungo Man and Mungo Lady's remains were found near Lake Mungo, NSW and they show evidence of an approx. 42,000 year old ritual burial thus making some of the oldest remains (of Homo Sapiens) ever found, outside of Africa. They are of great importance to their Aboriginal descendants who reside in the Willandra Lakes area, such as the Paakantji, Ngyiampaa and Mutthi Mutthi people. Description

A prehistoric rock shelter in the Flinders Ranges, known as Warratyi, contained evidence that Aboriginal Australians settled in the interior of the country around 49,000 years ago. The site is approx. 550km north of Adelaide and "...also contains the first reliably dated evidence of human interaction with megafauna." Description

Evidence has been found which suggests that there were humans in Madjedbebe 65,000 years ago, however this estimate has been contested as of 2017 (there is wide acceptance of there being humans there at least 50,000 years ago.) It is one of the oldest known sites indicating human presence in Australia. (Source: https://openresearch-repository.anu.edu.au/handle/1885/238559)

Description

Rising sea levels separated Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) and mainland WA approx. 7000 years ago. Up until this point, it had been inhabited by Aboriginal people Wadjemup means "place across the water where the spirits are." Artefacts found on the island date back to 6500 - 30,000 years ago, with some recent evidence from 1999 possibly suggesting human occupation of the island as far back as 70,000BP.
