Description
A video of a gift exchange custom taking place in Kudas, a Bargam speaking village near Matukar. Ten years previously, people from Bargam village further inland gifted a large amount of sago to the people of Kudas. In the sago basket was an empty rice packet. That was a sign that the return for the gift should be the same amount of rice. After ten years of collecting money, the Kudas people were ready to give them back a huge basket of rice. A feast was prepared for the handover of the basket. The villagers must carry back their massive basket of rice back to their village without dropping it. The people of Kudas followed and jeered them. This collection has a video of the custom, a narration of that video and a written account of the custom. Funded by Living Tongues and National Geographic Enduring Voices.

Eddie Gim (eg) tellls the traditional story of Manub and Kubol. This is a story that, traditionally, only men can tell and know the details of. It was told to me one-on-one, and others were actively discouraged from over-hearing or observing. It is the story of two brothers and their differences. The story has a connection to traditional spiritual beliefs, but the details of that are not something Gim was comfortable recording. At one point in the story, Gim refers to the age of the brothers being like his son, Rodger. Later Rodger is visible in the video bringing his father something to drink and then leaving. Gim also points to cardinal directions during the story, which I later confirmed using a compas.

Biskom Gamai brings a gugu 'sand mole' and a boiboi 'nautilus' shell, also called, perhaps incorrectly urit adahain 'octopus shell'. The animal might be called boiboi, but the shell sapam. There are various members of Matukar who disagree about the name of this. I consulted Biskom Makom, Kadagoi Rawad Forepiso, John Maram, Clara Kusos Darr and Simporian Kaigul.

Anna Dagui (ad), Matthew Kaitib (mk) and Augusta Silim (as) are all speakers of Manam. The women both married men from Matukar, although at different periods. Anna is married to John Bogg and is most often called 'Nen Manamuk' or 'Manamuk' by others. Augusta married Silim Baug, who has passed away. Matthew, also called 'Manti', has a mother (Elisabeth Kaitib) from Manam who is the sister of the women's father (Peter Dagui). Matthew's mother married a man from Matukar (Joe Kaitib). Joe Kaitib is the elder brother of Dui Kaitib. Anna, Matthew and Augusta take turns recounting Manam customs, which are much stronger than Matukar customs. They speak in Mamam as another person translates into Tok Pisin for the other after each sentence.
