Description | The project consists of digitising the 1939 Roro-French dictionary by Père Paulo Coluccia, MSC and adding additional words as necessary. Roro/Waima is an Austronesian language of the Central Province of Papua New Guinea. The project will correct spelling and grammar and create English glosses of head words and illustrative sentences direct from Roro/Waima language to English. Existing French glosses will be retained. Audio recordings will be made for headwords and most sentences. Illustrations will be created where possible. The data will be entered into Lexique Pro and it is intended that two formats (electronic and printed) will be produced for community use by October 2018. The project has broad community endorsement and offers of practical support from the National Museum of PNG and the Director of Research at the University of PNG. Nominated language consultants are Ikupu Paru and Freddie Ovia, both from Hisiu Village, with linguistic guidance by Colleen Hattersley.
