An old couple had only one son. He was but a fool. Though he was a fool his parents loved him much. So, they gave him whatever he wanted to make him happy. They had all the things they needed in the family - cows, goats, etc. One day the son asked his father for a pair of cows to plough. He went to a forest and cleaned the jungle. People who saw him thought that he was a mad. He took the cows from his father and tilled the plot. People asked him what he was going to sow. He replied that he was going to sow 'salt'. People laughed at him. He asked for salt from his father. He got it and sowed it in the field. The grass grew taller and taller. He thought that he would harvest a bumper crop of salt. One day he discovered that his field was damaged by some animals. He examined the footmarks and concluded that it must be the rice crushing tools from a nearby village. He went the village taking his long knife and cautioned each and every family to tie their rice crushing tools immediately or else face his anger. They all obeyed him. That night he waited and watched his field. He found out that an animal was eating his salt plants. He went near to it cautiously and caught it by the tail. The elephant got startled, blowed its trumpet and flew to the heaven. He found himself at the doors of a king. He demanded whose animal it was and why should that damage his crops. The king realized that the elephant did something wrong on the earth. The king gave him some gold coins and sent him back to the earth. He became rich. People thought that he became rich from the salt cultivation. They wanted to follow his advice and become rich like him. Once they all went to the field at night and waited till the elephant came there to go to the heaven. They really found that the elephant was there. So, they formed a string of people, moved near to it cautiously and caught by the tail. The elephant flew upwards, but lo! they fell from above and all died leaving their family members in sorrow. There was an old couple. They had plenty of land but not a child. So they were unhappy. They worked hard as the others in the village did. In those days people didn't know how to count days and months. So, they used to count seasons according to the turn of agricultural crops. One season, the old farmer was not willing to till his land. He grew old and lazy. Other people in the village already started sowing their crops. Seeing that his wife insisted that he should also start cultivating without delay. But he was reluctant and wouldn't start to work. Meanwhile other people have already finished rice plantation for that season. When he was badly scolded by his wife he moved out to his field only to see that other people have already finished. He felt guilty and told his wife that they would starve. He got angry with the season for not waiting him. So, he decided to search, find him, beat him up if necessary and bring back so that he could plant rice in his field. His wife prepared and gave him enough food to carry along in the search of the season and warned him not to return till he found the season. So, he went along asking everyone he met about the season. But he didn't get a good response from anyone. So, he went on and on. At last, God was sympathetic to him and appeared before him in disguise of an ordinary man. God taught him what the season is all about and that it can't wait for anyone. Since the old farmer missed the season God asked him to go back home giving an idea. The idea was that he should visit others' field during harvesting time and enquire how many bundles of rice they could get that season. If they replied less than what they actually produced the difference in quantity would go to his granary. When he did according to God's advice that really worked out. So, he didn't lose any, instead gained. They were both very happy to realize that they were blessed by God for being truthful. From that incident they realized what the season was and that it can't wait anyone. They worked hard as they did before and in time and lived happily. Duration 00.21.10. There lived a boatman near a river. He was very poor and used to earn by ferring people in the river. A preacher used to live in the nearby village. He used to preach his religion and converted people into his fold. They didn't know each other though the preacher crossed the river several times in the past using his boat. One day he dared to ask him about his job. He replied that he was a preacher and that he helped people who wanted to see God. At this the boatman insisted that he gave him his religion becasue he wanted to see and talk to God. Then the preacher didn't pay attention to his requests and tried to avoid the matter every time. The boatman felt ashamed and wanted to teach him a lesson. One day he took him to the middle of the river and threw away the oar to scare him. He then told him to either swim acroos or drown in the river. At this the preacher got really frightened and pleaded for his life in return for his religion. Then the boatman swam and brought back the oar to steer the boat. When he demanded of the religion from the preacher he asked him to measure the length of the oar first by the hand. He obeyed and found that it equalled ten hands. The preacher tactfully told him that 'Ten Hand' was his God and he was happy to befool him. He advised him to pray God by that name. When he prayed incessantly, a Goddess with ten hands really appeared before him one day. He was blessed and became rich. One day he saw the preacher from far and ran towards him to tell the truth. On seeing him running towards his direction with the long oar, the preacher thought that his intention was to beat him up. So he ran for his life. The boatman shouted at him not to run but he ran with more force. But then he fell on the ground. The boatman nursed, took care of him and brought to his house. He was surprised to see his beautiful houses and buildings. He felt ashamed of himself thinking that though he had been preaching throughout his life, he didn't get to see Him or gain his blessings. They misunderstood the old couple and took the shit to be the coins hidden by the tree. They incidentally ate the shit one by one in the search of coins and had to move out from that place. They got angry and came back to storm the old couple another night. But they failed in this attempt too. They made another attempt to loot the old couple, but failed again. This time they not only faced humiliation but lost the tips of their noses. The old man knew it in advance that they would come to the market in search of medicines. So in disguise of a physician he set up a stall where he sold some artificial noses having poison. The thieves one by one bought those noses from him. There were seven brothers in a village. They had a widow sister who they brought after her husband's expiry to live just next to them. She had her only son and they used to live by selling milk. The cow she had was very cunning and used to go away at night to eat up things that belonged to her brothers. When complained she didn't believe it because whenever they searched for the cow, it was found tied to a post in the cowshed. One day her brothers caught the cow and beaten to death. The sister was helpless. Her son knew that the cow-skin was useful and some people buy it to make shoes, etc. So, he took the skin to the market. While he was on the way, a bird came near him and dropped a bag containing a lot of money. He left the cow-skin there and took the bag with full of money home. They were counting the money when the wife of one of the seven brothers saw them. On enquiry she was told that they got the money from selling the cow-skin. When the brothers came to know about this, they became greedy and decided to kill their own cows and sell the skin to be rich. When they took the skin to a market, no one bought it. So they became angry with their sister and decided to set fire the house along with herself and her only son. When she heard about their brothers' plan she and her son digged the ground inside her house to hide. Her brothers really burnt her house down, but they survived. Her brothers now decided to kill their nephew. They took him inside a sack to a deep river through a jungle. On the way they became thirsty, so went in search of water to drink. At that moment, a postman came by the way with a horse. Seeing the sack he went near it and talked to the boy. The boy was intelligent and by his oratory skill and tricks, put the postman under the sack and left the place taking his horse. The brothers took the postman to the river and threw him into the river. When they returned home they were surprised to see their nephew and the beautiful horse. The boy told them that there were many beautiful horses inside the river, so he just picked one. He told them that they could also bring horses of their choice if they went inside the water. They believed him and went to the river. The nephew then put each one of them inside sack on their permission and pushed down into the deep river one by one. They all died. There was a well-to-do family in a village. The couple of the family had a handsome boy. When he became adult his parents arranged a marriage for him with a beautiful girl from a nearby village. He didn't know anything about household affairs and responsibilities. He used to spend his time in leisurely activities and didn't have any idea about how to run a family. One day he lost his parents. So, day by day he became poorer and poorer since he didn't do any work. When his in-laws came to know about their plight they became very sorry and ashamed. One day the in-laws visited them with essential supplies for their meals. He felt ashamed because he didn't even have the minimum supplies at home for their meals. He didn't know what to do so kept mum. The daughter also felt ashamed and cried in a corner. Her husband didn't have courage to talk to his in-laws. When the mother gave her the supplied then she cooked for her parents and they all ate together. During the meal time the father-in-law just told him that if he didn't at least move his hands and legs he would have to live a life like that. This word struck him and he started thinking that he had really not been moving his hands and legs since long and decided to move them from next day. He couldn't sleep that night. Early next morning he went to a riverside and looked here and there just to find if there was someone. As he didn't see anyone he started moving his hands and legs and jumped a lot in the air with the hope that something might happen to his luck because his father-in-law told him so. Just a little away from him by the side of the river there were some thieves hiding and sharing the ornaments they had looted. They suddenly saw him and thought that many people were running towards them. They were frightened and ran away from that place leaving all their looting. He then ran towards them only to find a lot of gold ornaments and jewellery. He brought the jewellery home and pondered that his father-in-law was right to tell him to move his hands and legs. The speaker gives an account of the past Bodo history and culture. He says that one weakness of this community is the lack of language culture. They were once spread widely up to Bihar and Bangladesh. This fact can be established from the river names which are mostly of Bodo origin. Thakhwmtha, a Bodo king once ruled in Sonari near Sibsagar (Assam). Sukapha, an Ahom killed Thakhwmtha and established his kingdom. Then as a result of intermarriage and probably under pressure most of the Bodo people living in those places have converted to other cultures and hence lost the language. Description
The speaker gives an account of one of the main festivals of the Bodos known as Bwisagu. On the first day of the festival people clean up their homestead and give bath to their cows and buffaloes. They worship them by putting garlands, etc on their neck and body. Then young lads come out in groups to sing and dance. The young and the old all rejoice to their hearts during this festival.
