How might university and secondary school students engage with the political significance of Indigenous mobilities in modern Australia? We approach this question in teaching the history of an influential but largely forgotten Aboriginal activist, Dexter Daniels (c.1936-1999), who travelled great distances from his home community in the Northern Territory to advocate for Indigenous land and labour rights during the 1960s. The story of Daniels’ travelling life and activities is a powerful vehicle for understanding the importance of networks and connections in Indigenous rights struggles (nationally and globally), and the obstacles and challenges that activists face. This map details the travels of Dexter Daniels in 1970 in the year after his attendance at the 9th World Conference of Youth and Students in Sofia, Bulgaria |
