Description
This file set contains recordings of an elicitation set going through the first part of the SNG word list (not in order – I was following a more natural order, and also with various extra side questions) made with two speakers residing in Bimadbn village: Prnda Manze (F: Manze, M: Dämi), Krwa Girei (M: Pule Manze)
Both speakers are from Derideri village by origin. However, both have fathers from different language backgrounds (Prnda’s father from Náma, Krwa’s from Nmbu) and to that fact is attributed some key differences in their speech, most importantly the realisation of pN *x and of a vowel realised as a shortish /e/ by Krwa and as a schwa by Prnda. Though there were these small phonological differences, the two agreed in all cases on lexical choices.
The language used to be called Nambu, and the word Namna is a name brought in more recently to avoid confusion, because someone called Nambo got married into their clan (Nambo Sako).
The language is keyed to notebook pages, N2014B, pp. 12-32.
Note that the last four words written down failed to record ('make' to 'pull', on p. 31), so will need to be rerecorded.
For further Nambo material see also the coconut-planting story (CR 58) recorded from Qanama Wiya (with further input from Willie and Prnda), filed under the 2014 Coconut story interview folder (Kiembtuwirer group).
