Moyle's notes say "Donkeyman claimed to have grown up speaking Pitjantjatjara language at Warbuton." (a485151b4s3i6a.pdf)
Moyle's notes appear to have yarra kutjarra and tjarra kutjarra as meaning 'song text' (as well as other things).(a485151b4s3i6a.pdf)
Halls Creek was his town camp (a485151b4s3i6a.pdf)
Lyle states near end how 'Laka' is a phrase meaning 'whole lot (have to join in)''

Description
Sunday 9th December 2018, ca. 10-11am. 209 Hardey Rd Belmont Perth. David Stock and Hilda Flann's house.
Files transferred and notes typed up same day.
Interview with Hilda Flann and David Stock (Milangka) about the 'Laka', a travelling song for Myfany Turpin's project (University of Sydney). David 'Yandi' Stock is a Nyiyparli / Banyjima elder. Roy Hill is his country. I assume Hilda Flann is also Nyiyaparli but didnt get that confirmed. Hilda grew up at Marble Bar. Probably on what was the Reserve. Hilda recalls her mum sang this song. Hilda reiterated a number of times the age of the song.
Hilda is wearing Rode wireless lapel micrphone but this kept cutting out. I used the X and Y on the zoom recorder but there was quite a bit of background noise - aeroplanes, dog, children and CARS! Also wind noise.
Audio file listing is:
20181209Perth-1.WAV - DS' Thats the Laka'

Note that I interviewed Yandi previously in Port Hedland.
__
I didn't have notebook so types up scribble on my conference and book is below
Played Laka Marble Bar recordings first (OFrady02). Then Wallal Downs recordings (OGrady02). Then Pintupi recordings
'Parlkapi' is Nyiyaparli for public song and dance ceremonies = turlku.
David and Hilda believe the Sambo on OGrady02 is Sambo Yuninpuka (Purungu). He was a Warnman man. His sister's two duaghters live at Port Hedland / Strelly. Barbara and Sharon Hale ~ Hall. They are his nieces.
Sambo worked on Roy Hill (?) Marilana Station and lived at Marble Bar Reserve after that.
David thinks the songs "were given back to Millstream" implying that they came from there did a big trip and came back. Yindji Barndi people at Millstream. [compare with Patrick Ooladoodi's first recording]
David also talked about Pink eye and holiday time which was when they gathered for ceremony and would also sing this song.
David knew Sambo. "Those people reaer us up". David used to go to Marble Bar to visit 'and things like that'. Marble Bar was a small town for the people from the desert. No south hedland, no Newman, No Tom Price. People would go to Marble Bar for their holiday
David said they were 'tinning' thats where their life was.
Songs:
Hilda knows m-laka40, women used to shake their head to this one.She doesnt know m-laka45. m-laka30 no dancing, singing only. and Karima and the oter is Purungu and Milangka. m-laka25 Yandi sings along. Men used to dance around the fire to this one and Women shake their head side to side. They sit on their knees and move backwards - thats the dance to this song and some others. People would be grouped into their moieties. One moiety was panangka
Hilda doesnt know laka 54. m-laka24 woman sitting position and go backwards.
According to Yandi's niece who was there, yandi's nephew (presumably her husband) remembered the song from his time at Mulga Downs station. Mulga Downs station is located 96 kilometres (60 mi) north east of Tom Price and 167 kilometres (104 mi) south west of Marble Bar in the Pilbara region. I assume he was inside while we were doing the interviews.
m-laka53 'tintina' brought big smiles on both Yandi and Hilda's face and they both looked at each other. They clearly know this one well! Men dance going around the fire to this one. They clap sticks or hands.
'Kunitja yinma' is said to mean 'song from the south'
m-laka54 - men dance around the fire
m-laka50 - women swinging head, men dance around fire.
Yandi sings to m-laka48. Played Pintupi recordings . Yandi sings to m-laka44. They say this wasnt danced to.

**Note that David Nash noticed a snatch of wanji-wanji on the milpirri video:
Myf, I just was playing (again) the Milpirri from 2014 (or before) https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/video/344924739668/milpirri and at the 0m:52s point there's a snatch of Jerry Jangala singing "...wanjiwanji...". Did you know of this bit, and from the little bit can you say if it is it the usual wanjiwanji from those parts? - David.
I emailed Cath South, producer in May 2019:

Playing recordings of and talking about the Laka songs with John Watson at Jarlmadangah, WA, out the front of his house. Two of his grand-daughters, and Marlan (?) who is married to one fo them, and baby great-granddaughter, were also there. Discussion primarily in English.
No recordings made (I didnt think it appropriate to even ask, as there has just been a podcast 'wrong skin' come out that doesn't paint J Watson in a favourable light).
One photo taken with iphone by his granddaughter: MMT1-20180808JW-IMG01(20180808.JPG)

Pitjantjatjara women remember Wanji-wanji, a song from their childhood
Interview with Iluwanti Mervyn, Tinpulya Ken, Josephine Mick and Renee Kulitja by Patrick Hookey about a public ceremony that was once sung across central and western Australia. The song takes them back to their childhood in the north-west of south Australia, as well as Ernabella, Ooldea and Gerard Aboriginal Reserve.
From 2017-2019 musicologist Myfany Turpin and Interpretor Patrick Hookey interviewed Aboriginal people from NT, SA and WA about this song, playing recordings of it to people and learning about the time when it was popular.

(Kukatja?)
This is the story of Puranguwana, which means perishing in the sun. An old man, Yawalyurru, was trying to go to Gordon Downs from Sturt Creek. He camped halfway there with his wife and two children. They ran out of water because they had been walking in the wrong direction. The old man told his family he was going to look for water. He started walking a long way from the family. He followed mirage after mirage. But when he got near there was no water. He kept doing that for hours and hours. He was getting dizzy and weak from dehydration. He got worse and passed away there. Then his spirit came up and was going back to his country to the south east near Kiwirrkura and Kintore. He was a Pintupi man. But before he left, he gave the song to the Jaru people and they sing it today at special events.

Sunday 29th September 2019 at Pipilyatjara
Interview with Thomas Murray (Ngaatjatjara man).
Recorded by Myfany Turpin and Beth Sometimes (interpretor)
Thomas's wife was also there but she didnt contribute much.
Thomas described the dancing as 'line up'
He remembered it from Laverton as a young man.
He had heard it before in the bush north of Mantu Maru (Jamieson) as a child. See my fieldnotes that accompany the recording. He worked on Barwiji station, Indarindra Station, Handel station and seemed to remember it there.
He mentioned Munkarra Nguru. Not sure if that is a place name.
Talked to Pantjiti McKenzie about ICTV and showed everyone the video. They all mentioned 'Tjardiwanpa' - we not sure if it is a different ceremony (perhaps popular at the same time - although note some people said 'Jardiwanpa came after', or a generic for a song style.

Interviewed Glen Cooke on the side of the road just out of Wannan.

Saturday 9th June, ca 12pm
M Turpin interviews elders Suzie Gilbert (Nyangumarda) 'Jujumarta' and Betty Hunter with with interpreters Anna Dwyer and Jessica Bangu.
Recorded on JG's ZoomH4 - not good quality - there is mechanical noise in background.
Suzie was a teenager when she heard it.
Maru 'song' = inma
Listening to O'Grady 1955. The Nyangumarda introduction is said to be Tyanyungu. His sister is still alive and at the Nursing home in Broome. Her name is Bertha. Anna says she has gone a bit senile.
This used to be sung at Bidjadanga (La Grange)
Suzie's brother used to sing it. Winnie Grey , at Bidjadanga knows it.
'Walmananu' ?
GO: Wanyjanija nyungu yinma 'Where is this song from?'
Tyanyungu: Kuntijang ngananamili kuntijang yinma. Kunija ngananamili yinma. (tape goes off and on)
This is our song called 'Kuntijang'.
Warrmalamili yija mili mirri wakal-wakal-mili (?) ngananaimili yinma pinakarriya 'Kunija'.
It is a song from the South-East ceremonial groups. It is our song. You are going to hear this song (we are going to sing). Its called Kunija.
\n warrmala "corrobboree"; i.e. a type of public ceremony that involves dancing and singing. "song for a dance' (AD) .This is a Nyangumarda word. Means ceremonial group from the south-east.
\n Janet also says its from 'Warrmarla'. She says this word refers to ‘Pindan people from the desert side’ or 'people from the east’. Petri (1967) uses it when describing a person from Wallal who was killed "by people who came from ‘Warmala’, from the southwest.” (could southwest of Wallal be considered desert people?) Manjyiljarra dictionary has ‘stranger, people from south’; Ngaatjatjarra, Kukatja and Pintupi have ‘revenge party or confrontational warrior group’.
OG Six songs from the Nyangumarda tribe of North-west Australia, August 1955.
(singing m-laka53)
Tintin-rna x 2
warlaka warlangkaya

This song was sung at Walal station, Mandora station and Anna Plain station.

Jessica thinks kanka-yala
karnka 'going up'
-used to sing at night time around the camp fire. Big mob of kids, man and women
Note that people dont volonteer this sort of info. Usually they reflect on the actual people.
