NameVagrants Of Britain and Ireland in NSW: 1862-1880
Description

Arrests for vagrancy in NSW by place of birth in the British Isles, enabling comparison between Irish, Scottish and English arrests. This is drawn from searches of the extended data in the layer Vagrancy Arrests, NSW: 1862-1880 [Coleborne, 2023]. That layer includes arrests of people from many other countries, but here, we only compare Irish, Scottish and English. Looking at the cluster map, we see there were more Irish than English arrested for vagrancy and very few Scottish. The geographical distribution of Irish and English arrests is similar. The Colonial Census for NSW, 1871 shows that at this time, more people in NSW were born in England than NSW, such that Irish were disproportionately arrested for vagrancy "...17.35 per cent. of the total population, were born in England ; ... 12.50 per cent. of the population, in Ireland."
