description | IntroductionWelcome and Ela. The Virtual Coquun - Hunter River Project is a collaborative endeavour begun in December 2000 which aims to create a digital repository of early accounts and descriptions of the Hunter Region. Dr Glenn Albrecht has prepared an excellent paper entitled "Rediscovering">http://libguides.newcastle.edu.au/chrp/albrecht#s-lg-box-wrapper-5982476">Rediscovering the Coquun: Towards an Environmental History of the Hunter River" where he attempts, through a series of historical accounts, to provide a view of how things have changed with the River over time, and calls for continuing ecological restoration work and the establishment of a native sense of place by restoring the Aboriginal place names with their English equivalents. The Special Collections Team in the Auchmuty Library contains a fantastic collection of historical research material relating to Newcastle and the Hunter Region. There are a number of important early accounts from individuals who travelled through the region and wrote descriptions of what they saw. Unfortunately, not many people in the wider community know about them. In recent times, the book Novocastrian Tales (Newcastle: Elephant Press, 1997) edited by Mr Paul Walsh, brought together a large number of stories relating to the history of Newcastle. This project will expand on that work. Our dream is to one day create an interactive virtual Coquun-Hunter River as an educational tool that we can sail up at different time periods (e.g. Aboriginal dreaming, 1797, 1800, 1810, 1830, 1860, 1900, 1950, 2000 etc.) and where we can access digitised historical materials such as scanned accounts from books, diaries, oral history transcriptions, paintings, photographs etc, that have been incorporated into various points along the journey. If you see this as an interesting idea, why not contact us with any suggestions and comments. If you wish to sponsor the digitisation of a particular sourcework, then view our benefactors page">http://libguides.newcastle.edu.au/c.php?g=218811&p=1445965#s-lg-box-wrapper-5160928">benefactors page for more information on how you can assist us in our endeavours. description | The Virtual Sourcebook for Aboriginal Studies in the Hunter RegionThis site was originally created to assist the Awaba project, a collaborative venture by the University of Newcastle's School of Liberal Arts and the Wollotuka School of Aboriginal Studies. The original brief was to digitise the works of Reverend Lancelot Threlkeld, but we continued to identify materials from the collections relating to Aboriginal people throughout Newcastle and the wider Hunter Region. Due to the assistance of scholars and members of the local indigenous and non indigenous community the site grew rapidly to include many hundreds of sources. We hope that this will lead to a better understanding and respect of the richness and beauty of the Aboriginal view. description | Aboriginal Dreaming accounts and descriptions
For what we do know of the early Aboriginal inhabitants of the region, much we owe to the work of two individuals, the Aboriginal leader of the Awabakal clan, Biraban or M'Gill, who flourished circa 1800 - 1850, and the missionary Lancelot Edward Threlkeld (1788 - 1859), who created an Aboriginal mission on the banks of Lake Macquarie in 1826. Threlkeld, as well as acting as protector of the Aboriginal people, compiled a grammar and vocabulary of the Awabakal dialect. As part of his missionary instruction, and with the help of Biraban as his tutor, he questioned the Aboriginals about their language, beliefs and witnessed some of their rituals, recording dreaming stories, important places, as well as ritualistic practices. Threlkeld's correspondence and papers were edited by Niel Gunson in Australian Reminiscences and Papers of L.E. Threlkeld: Missionary to the Aborigines 1824 - 1859. Canberra, A.C.T.: Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies, 1974. Threlkeld's published works on the Awabakal language that were originally published as pamphlets were brought together and edited by John Fraser in 1892 under the title An Australian Language as spoken by the Awabakal the people of Awaba and Lake Macquarie (Near Newcastle, New South Wales) being an account of their Language, Traditions, and Customs. Sydney: Charles Potter, Government Printer, 1892. [See the Works of Rev L.E.
