In 1972 Errey completed a PhD thesis at the University of Melbourne on the subject of "Victorian Architectural Ornament 1880-1920". The thesis presented a technical and historical account of the chief materials employed in architectural ornament in the period: cement and plaster, terracotta and brick, wood and metal.
As part of her research from 1968 to 1970 Sophia photographed buildings in Melbourne and regional Victoria (mainly Geelong and Ballarat) in order to develop a taxonomy of architectural ornamental detail. The prints and negatives sat in boxes for half a century until she approached Andy May's team and suggested the images be digitised and made available to others interest in Australia's architectural and urban history. |
